Il georgiano è parlato come prima lingua da circa 3,9 milioni di persone in Georgia. Altri 3,5 milioni di persone lo parlano all’estero (soprattutto in Turchia, Russia, Stati Uniti ed Europa, con piccole comunità in Iran ed Azerbaigian). La lingua georgiana comprende circa 17 dialetti, suddivisi sostanzialmente in un gruppo orientale e in uno occidentale, alcuni dei quali sono stati fortemente influenzati dal linguaggio dominante della regione in cui sono parlati. In generale sono più conservativi i dialetti delle regioni montuose.
La lingua letteraria, che si basa sul dialetto cartiliano (pianure orientali), fu una conseguenza della conversione dell’élite georgiana al cristianesimo, avvenuta a metà del IV secolo. La nuova lingua letteraria venne costruita su un’infrastruttura culturale già ben definita, appropriandosi delle funzioni, convenzioni, e stato dell’aramaico.
In Georgia sono parlate anche altre lingue: soprattutto il russo, l’armeno, l’azero.
